One Sock Missing by The Grifters

  1. One Sock Missing is a huge achievement in producing gritty, ramschackling rock songs that really sound distinct from one another.Opener Bummer is a signature of how hard the songs are to pin down. The song's structure feels like a wild, motor running, and then the motor quickly reversing on itself. It may use that classic loud/quiet/loud dynamic, but it has a very distinctive garage sound,.
  2. The three members of the devilishly stylish Masonics all spent time in at least one of those legendary bands and in more recent years came together to form a veritable supergroup of the British rock 'n'roll scene. I am a firm believer that this is one of the greatest rock songs of the 90s:
It really does speak for itself. Beautiful harmonies, chords that are dark, yet a production that makes you float.

I have felt that 'The Casual Years' is incredible since randomly discovering it when I was 15 on some weird torrent site place; but as the stupidly unadventurous brat I was, I never even had a hint of curiosity about the rest of the album. I think I felt snobbish about the album cover, which I now really like.

So I checked out the rest of the album, and can confirm that no song has the control or resplendent-production of 'The Casual Years'. However, now I have the sophistication to say this is a great thing.
One Sock Missing is a huge achievement in producing gritty, ramschackling rock songs that really sound distinct from one another. Opener Bummer is a signature of how hard the songs are to pin down. The song's structure feels like a wild, motor running, and then the motor quickly reversing on itself. It may use that classic loud/quiet/loud dynamic, but it has a very distinctive garage sound, and also it fucking rocks throughout. The chorus groan makes me moan: 'Nobody knows her when she's down.'

Also, the instrumentation on the album, whilst mainly a traditional rock set-up, can really surprise. From the violins on Wonder, where Slim Taylor sings from the perspective of someone who has just been run-down by a track and is fading away, to the weird, carnivalesque ending of I Arise, that sounds like the funeral for a clown. The album is a lot of fun to listen, and while it has traditional garage-rock elements, and songs that are angsty and make you relish in isolation and your hormones, there is a lot of weird musical experimentation that sets The Grifters apart from their associated scene.

I fucking love this album, especially Just Passing Out that makes me feel like a very desperate, emotional person, and I feel anyone who reads this blog will really love it too.
