That's odd, I'm swimming in thousands of rounds of ammo. The only guns that I don't have 4 digit ammo in are the .308, .38, and .44 - of which I have 3 digits worth.

This is still an RPG world at heart, you just need to explore and not blast at everything that moves with hundreds of rounds.

I second the above comment; I'm drowning in ammo. But I don't use Assault Rifles much, mostly just Hunting Rifles and Combat Shotguns.Adamv 16:32, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I kind of disagree with this, playing before Vault 87 in the Capitol Building I actually had somewhere around 930 rounds of 5.56. I especially dont see how .32 is more common than 5.56. While I dont go through .32cal as fast as 5.56 I still have to periodically restock it, while I dont have the same problem with 5.56. Even with that said, I dont think that this game is really about having massive piles of ammo to slaughter your enemies. If anything, I would say that there's an overabundance of 5.56.

That and imo the availability of 5.56 really changed after Waters of Life. (Tarik 03:26, 5 December 2008 (UTC))

For me, 5.56 was scarce in the early part of the game. But once I hit the Metro tunnels under the D.C. ruins, and started attacking Raider and Talon Merc camps all over the map, I began to score. Note that I did not bother to trade with the Outcasts, nor did I use the Assault Rifle much. I also didn't visit Merchants or Traders every three days.--Brian ranzoni 19:51, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

In my first character, I stockpiled 5.56 until level 15-16, when I had about 900 rounds. Then for my second character, I bought whatever 5.56 rounds I found from whatever vendor. I noticed that Flak and Shrapnel tend to carry relatively large amounts (bet. 50-100, one time over 400) of 5.556 rounds. --Azncutthroat 02:36, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

5.56 Surplus Ammo

why is the surplus 5.56 actually better than standard, and acts as though your weapon is in better condition? is this a glitch, or just an homage to how durable assault rifles are?

x3 condition means that it deteriorates 3x as fast, unless you mean the .223 'surplus'(listed in wiki as such) which deteriorates 20% slower..The damage bonus might be a 'homage' to how bad ammo tends to do more damage to everything in general.(The gun itself, etc.) 15% more damage for 3x condition loss is horrible. You can just take the Built to Destroy trait if you want damage for condition. I would NOT use this ammo unless I somehow run out of normal ammo.

Any references that x3 CND means 3 times condition loss and not 3x your current condition (i.e. 25% becomes 75%)? I keep telling people it's condition loss but have no references to prove it.

Whilst I have no written proof, go fire off a few clips of surplus ammo with the All-American rifle, you can see the weapon condition deteriorate rapidly. --Webley 04:56, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Fallout New Vegas 5.56 Ammo

The 5.56x45mm round is a rifle cartridge derived from the .223 Remington, originally developed for the M16 service rifle of the United States Army.[1][2] It is a rimless, bottleneck cartridge that offers tremendous wounding potential under the right condition. Its performance and popularity among military forces endures despite the Great War: By 2287, it has served Americans for over two centuries, from the United States Army to the New California Republic Army.
